Lisa Fonssagrives

Dancer turned Fashion Muse, turned photographer, turned fashion designer, turned sculptor. The Audrey Hepburn of Supermodels. Self proclaimed as the perfect clothes hanger, Lisa Fonssagrives gives us a little taste of what classic, old time fashion photography was about before all the sex, drugs, fame and hysteria hit the world of fashion photography.
Don't get me wrong I love fashion photography, even still to this day, I think it's brilliant but this..this is something so different.  These photos have elegance, class, simplicity-elements we rarely get to see today in fashion photography with the exception of those who are doing a modern take on these same shoots.
She wasn't just a fashion model. Through he lens of Fashion photography's most discerning historian, Martin Harrison describes Lisa as having five careers but properly focuses on her role as model and muse to some of this century's greatest photographers, in Paris from 1936 to 1939 and in New York, from Richard Avedon to Irving Penn.

  1. The beautiful woman with elephants is Dovima. The picture was taken in August 1955 by Avedon and this is correct.
